Imagine spending two weeks of your high school summer on a beautiful college campus, learning what it takes to be a film director, a sports agent, or a criminal defense lawyer. Or picture yourself learning about the forensic science behind ‘C.S.I.’. Or sitting behind the anchor desk of a working television news station. Or mastering a foreign language with a group of new friends from around the world.
These exciting opportunities are all available at SummerBerg, a unique and exciting summer learning experience on the campus of Heidelberg College, a liberal arts college in northwest Ohio. Our residential, academic program is open to students entering grades 8-12. During each two-week session, students live together in a modern residence hall on Heidelberg’s idyllic campus; they participate in organized social activities, venture out on field trips, and immerse themselves in one of nine academic programs.
SummerBerg is designed to keep students engaged through hands-on classroom projects, fun activities, and personal coaching. Courses are designed to be challenging, but also clear and accessible. Our team of talented teachers and Resident Advisors (RAs) are trained to serve students not only as educators, but also as counselors, mentors, and friends. Throughout their stay, students are encouraged to take advantage of the many resources available to them at Heidelberg and in the surrounding community. A typical afternoon after classes may find students watching movies, playing basketball, singing karaoke, or venturing to a nearby destination for an educational adventure. SummerBerg's staff members oversee students on a 24-hour basis and ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome For students who want to sample college life, who are curious about a career field, or who simply want to break up the summer doldrums, SummerBerg offers a relaxed setting in which to learn and grow while making new friends from around the country. Far from the cliques and social pressures of high school, students often gain self-confidence and maturity, learning about themselves while exploring their intellectual and personal interests.
All rising eighth through twelfth grade boys and girls are welcome to attend SummerBerg. Our programs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Each SummerBerg residential session lasts two weeks, starting on a Sunday and ending on a Friday. Students who attend both sessions this summer earn a multi-session discount and may also stay on campus over the weekend in between sessions. The best part about attending both sessions is having the opportunities both to meet two groups of new friends, and to pursue two different academic fields of interest.
