  • Description:

The Litchfield Jazz Camp, operating since 1997, offers students of all ages and abilities the opportunity to study with an internationally recognized faculty of jazz musicians in a non-competitive environment. Our home is the beautiful and historic country campus of Forman School, in Litchfield, CT.Our students experience a total jazz immersion in courses ranging from one to four weeks. They study and perform in skill matched combos, both at the school and on the Gazebo Stage at THE LITCHFIELD JAZZ FESTIVAL- which JazzTimes Magazine called "among the best of the best," and the New York Times said the festival had a "model jazz line-up."

Admission requires no audition, just a strong commitment to learning improvisational jazz.  At a minimum, however, beginners must know their notes and have basic reading skills. The Camp is under the Musical Direction of tenor saxophonist Don Braden. He and an expert faculty guide students through classes in performance, improvisation, jazz history, rhythm and percussion, big band, music theory, composition, the business of music, recording, a course in the American Songbook and more. Instruction is offered in voice, piano, guitar, bass, drums, Latin rhythms, saxophones, clarinet, flute, brass, and more. Evening jam sessions and faculty concerts are a regular feature.Students also receive instruction from festival stars. These have included Toots Thielemans, Eric Reid, Mary Stallings, Sonny Rollins, Eric Alexander, Tom Harrell, Bill Charlap, Kenny Werner, Kenny Rankin, Stanley Turrentine, Paquito D’Rivera, James Moody, Danilo Perez, Jane Monheit and many others.
